The Center for Southeast Asian Studies was established in 1963 at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb. Located 65 miles west of Chicago, Northern Illinois University is a comprehensive undergraduate and graduate university with approximately 23,000 students. A federally funded National Resource Center since 1997, the Center for Southeast Asian Studies provides leadership, focus, and coordination for Southeast Asian studies at the university. It also provides outreach and K-12 teacher training for communities throughout northern Illinois. |

CSEAS is very proud to announce that Anies Baswedan (Ph.D. Political Science, NIU 2007) has been listed by Foreign Policy Magazine as among the 100 Top Public Intellectuals world-wide. Anies is currently president of Paramadina University in Jakarta, Indonesia, and a noted political analyst. He studied with Dr. Dwight King and played a leading role in the student movements in Indonesia in the late 1990s. Foreign Policy Magazine

The Mandala Newsletter - Fall 2006
A new grant entitled "Cultural Citizens and North-South Dialogue: Building the
National Identity and Civic Participation in the Philippines" was awarded to
CSEAS members Dr. Sue Russell (Anthropology) and Dr. Lina Davide-Ong
(International Training Office) by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural
Affairs (ECA), U.S. Department of State. The grant begins September 1,

Northern Illinois University Libraries, along with a consortium of U.S.
