Fall 2007 Brown Bag Lecture Series:
A current listing of our weekly lecture series held Fridays at 12 noon in the Campus Life Building, Room 110.

Burma Culture Night - Friday, October 5, 2007 at 6 p.m. (doors open at 5:30) in the Chandelier Room, Adams Hall. Sponsored by BIG-NIU (Burma Interest Group) and the Southeast Asia Club.  Please see this flyer for details.

Events for the exhibit: Cambodia Born Anew: Kamnoet Khmae Tmey. Anthropology Museum, Northern Illinois University.  All events except the workshop are free and open to the public.

Exhibit Opening and Reception - Cambodia Born Anew: Kamnoet Khmae Tmey.  Friday, October 5 from 5-7 p.m., Stevens Building.  NIU's Anthropology Museum presents this new exhibit on the amazing story of the rebirth of Cambodian culture in the aftermath of the Khmer Rouge genocide (1975-1979). The exhibit focuses on daily life, from agriculture and fisheries to textile weaving and the rebirth of institutions such as the education system and Buddhist temples. Cambodian students and scholars, Dr. Judy Ledgerwood and Dr. Kheang Un, will be on hand to speak briefly about the exhibit. The museum is located in the Stevens Building, first floor, north wing. Film Night: Wednesday, October 17, 2007 from 6-9 p.m., DuSable Hall, Room 204. S-21: The Khmer Rouge Killing Machine, by filmmaker Rithy Panh. Discussion will follow.

Brown Bag Lecture: Friday, October 26, 2007, 12 noon - 1 p.m., Campus Life Building, Room 110. Leon Lim, Chair, Board of Directors, Cambodia American Heritage Museum and Killing Fields Memorial, Chicago, will speak about the history of the Cambodian American Heritage Museum and Killing Fields Memorial including a discussion of their current exhibit: "Khmer Spirit: Arts and Culture of Cambodia."

Brown Bag Lecture: Friday, November 2, 2007, 12 noon - 1 p.m., Campus Life Building, Room 110.  Prof. Judy Ledgerwood, Associate Professor and Chair, Department of Anthropology, NIU, will speak on "The Rebirth of Cambodian Buddhism.”

Workshop for K-16 Educators: Saturday, November 3, 2007 from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m., Stevens Building , Room 206.  This workshop will highlight the new exhibit and will provide resources and tools for teaching about the Cambodian genocide in the classroom.  Registration required.  Contact Julia Lamb, Outreach Coordinator, Center for Southeast Asian Studies, 815-753-1595 for more information.
