Since its founding as a normal school in 1899, NIU has delivered teacher Licensure programs that prepare candidates to meet state and national standards for each subject area or field, as well as our own rigorous expectations for new teacher performance.
In our second century, we continue to believe that excellence in learning is built on excellence in teaching, and that excellence in teaching begins with the quality of the preparation program.
We are therefore committed to assuring that all of the candidates we recommend for Licensure, as well as those for whom we provide continuing professional development, have the knowledge and skills needed to teach and lead in a complex and ever-changing society.
The preparation and continuing professional development of high-quality educators ultimately involves all parts of the institution. This is particularly true of the P-20 initiatives which align the rich resources of the university with the needs of local educators and communities across the region.
